yes it can.. its called a USB power Surge, the devices you have connected were requiring more power than your system could provide them with, which also starves the system of the power that it would need to boot.

dude, you don't need to take the keyboard out to get to the hard drive, flip your laptop over, look at the bottom, you'll see the logo for hard drives (its the picture of stacked platters) there's usually one screw holding it in place,...
ebay... just watch around for what you want, I spent a couple months, just watching daily, and ended up scoring an NX5000 in perfect condition, for $150 because it was listed in the wrong category. can't beat that!

is there a hardware volume control on the laptop itself (usually on the front or side) sometimes a wheel sometimes a couple buttons.
check for that (it may just be turned all the way down)
I've seen this with the "J" mouse on ibm and dell laptops where it'll stick in a certain position and just start floating around the screen. by chance is your touchpad nice and dirty? do you have clam hands?
