Afaik HDMI and DVI is practically the same, the difference is that HDMI transfers both audio and video, DVI is only video. Picture-quality-wise there should be no difference.

Well i've used mine on my lap and i haven't had any problems with the heat. Sure, it's warm, but not scorching.
