It is only possible by also replacing the motherboard as well. Not sure if other components need upgrading. You would be better off selling the 5720 and using the money to buy a notebook that already has Core 2 Duo.
I have yet to see a respectable driver for the Elantech touchpad on any of the M57** models. Most people i know either uninstall the driver and use the generic Win XP driver or they install the Synaptics touchpad drivers.

I have only really used Mepis, Suse (K)Uubuntu and found that as afar as out of the box goes then Suse was best followed by Mepis and then Ubuntu.
However, after a bit of tinkering to set the system up...
