you have to either burn your files to cd or dvd then copy them to the new drive when you put it in the machine, or find some other external storage space you can access after installing the new drive.

are you comfortable with backing up your files and reinstalling the operating system? if you are, i would start there and rule out a hardware issue. if you are not, i would keep trying to find a software issue that is known to cause...
