I would use the computer for a few days to make sure it's working properly, this gives you a chance to kick the tires as it were, and contact Dell before the 21 day return policy ends if you end up with a lemon.

The only way I know of testing the battery is 1. within the OS, 2. within the bios and 3. physically on the battery there is a test button you can press. I may be wrong as I don't use media direct very often.
I checked my machine's and in the BIOS is a setting under security called "Computrace" its a notebook tracking system. I assume this would be the same as the XPS systems. I don't know if this is enabled or can be...
