Starclub is correct. That HowTo you followed was for a 2.4.x kernel. Try these steps:
# make menuconfig
# make all
# make modules_install
# make install
If you get build errors then run make clean before these...
hmmm....That 'invalid module format' error is interesting.
Those modules don't seem to be built for the kernel you're running. Are you sure you used the same kernel source? and compiler?
Did you reboot into your new kernel?...
