I bought a new keyboard from Nexoc in Germany, www.nexoc.de. 40 Euros + shipping from their service department in Dachau. Nexoc Odin E801 is identical to the Sager 8790, both are just re-badged Clevo D870P.
I bought a D870PBAT-12, 14.8V and 6600mAh, from China. Think it was $ 90-100 with shipping. The laptop will run for about 90-110 minutes with that battery. Just a pity it is running that loud.

I have had just the same kind of failure on my Nexoc E801 (identical to Clevo D870P, Sager 8790, Hypersonic GX-7, Eurocom etc.).
Got the LCD back cover replaced for free. It is about 20 € at www.clevo-computer.de.

So you have applied the 0.5 mm thick tape even to the "indents" for the GPU and the Northbridge? Will the rest of the tape covered spots still be in contact with the metal plate then? Maybe you have been useing different grades...
