Try inserting only one of them. Boot. Then switch to the other one. Boot. Likely, one of them is broken. Get it replaced.
I had a similar issue: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread206110.html IIRC, I had a bad RAM stick. New RAM, all well. I would try removing one RAM stick at a time to see if it boots. If not, try checking all motherboard connectors.
It's a hardware limitation that was fixed in Santa Rosa laptops (i.e. most 2007 models and onwards)

Me too, I have the exact same drive. It's very handy and works well will all *computers* I've attached it to, but it hasn't worked well with most USB hubs! The only exception is a dlink hub that works when in turn connected to a computer...
I haven't actually heard of anyone with issues with an engineering sample. I would guess that there might be heat issues? But random crashes? Not that I've heard of. I wouldn't rely on one for a mission-critical system, and it may void...
