I'd try a program called gparted (GNOME partition editor) on the LiveCD. You can see there if the partition(s) on the drive are intact at all. DON'T modify anything (gparted will warn you before, but anyway). Just look at the partitions...

The M1730 keyboard is the one with backlight. It might be possible to transfer to the 1720, but certainly not to the e1705. The M1710 does *not* have backlight.
The e1705 has a (flash) card reader, as does the m1710. However, the M1710, like the M90, *also* has a SmartCard reader, used for advanced authentication etc. Don't confuse the two.
