Just thought I'd end this thread ... the problen was in fact, DirectX9, MechWarrior4 only works with 7-8.1. Thanks for all the help. A quick rebuild and I'm back up and running.

Sorry about the mistake. My laptop is running in it's native mode of 1600x1200. I never get to a screen to select a resolution for playing. I've even tried lowering the screen resolution to 1024x68xhigh color to no avail. Here the error...
