I think that card is basically just the eqiv of the spdif out that comes as standard laptop. i.e no actual encoding hardware + at any rate most games don't support DD they use EAX for surround.

Extremely doubtful, firstly the connector is proberbly the wrong size. Even if it did fit then the pin configuration would proberbly be different, as this requires power for the lights. The actual shape of the keyboard looks wrong...

It sounds like its using an external display (with a lower resolution) whenever you shut the lid, which is how I have mine setup (shut lid = tv out come on so I can watch movies on tv). Check the display properties and the nvidia ones...
