This sounds like a connector cabling issue. I, too, had an intermittent vertical line. Some opening-closing the screen cleared it up for me.
One possibility is overheating. Seems consistent with your description of waiting. This board has many, many threads on the subject of overheating. Do a search and see what you come up with.
