It's your choice and I don't want to encourage you to do anything that's dangerous to your system, but my experience with the Go 6800 DDR2 card was that Coolbits recommended I not go higher than a 295MHz core clock (default is 250MHz)...
That's a good score, the highest I've seen so far a Go 6800 DDR3 card was Ambitwogunz's 5027 in 3DMark '05 using an overclock of 396/1180Mhz (GPU/Memory).
I used to have similar problems in HL2, especially in the canals where my framerate could drop as low as 9fps, I don't any longer (canals never drops below 25-30fps) - I can't say exactly what fixed the issue the following things have...

Coolbits' auto detection is pretty conservative when it comes to the core speed, my GPU core overclocks stably at a 22% higher clockrate than the auto detection recommends. IMO The best thing to do is take it up a step at a time manually...
