Sounds like your backlight has gone on the screen. My sisters laptop did that and had togo back to Dell to be replaced.

Hi I recently bought the G30-117. I dont use outlook express on it and have not had any of the memory errors. When i tried to unzip to largish file it crashed on me, similiar to yours i think, and so I installed WinRAR and it unzips them...

Ive got a toshiba g30 with a geforce 7600 and I rarely notice any fan noise coming from the laptop when browsing or using office. Even during intensive games, the fan noise increases but it is still pretty quiet compared to my desktop...
