I concur with some of the previous posters. There is nothing wrong with Alps touchpads in current Dell's offers. Just set the driver's properties right and wait until the surface wears out.
How about the usual troubleshooting? Remove the modem software, then its drivers via Device Manager, install the latest version from Dell's website, etc.
Once you have got SP2, don't go back, just wait for an update. In the near future, even cautious guys like me won't be able to stay away from SP2, since MS will asssume SP2 is installed for their future security updates.
As far as I remember (I'm not using it), the unique feature of Dell's Quickset (vs Windows standard options) is that it enables the network card to power down, thus saving some battery life.
