In the meantime, if you are not afraid of opening your box, you could try to reseat the LCD cable. See the service manual

Either Windows or some program keep accessing your HDD. First, turn off the Indexing Service (right click on your HDD in My Computer, go into Properties, etc.).
I'm not using Quickset, so these are just guesses.
Going into standby should turn off the HDD as well.
Your intended settings should work with no trouble. Just try them, and don't worry in advance.
I concur with the previous posters. You get much better value with the IBM box overall, even for the GPU, since it has 128MB. The Acer's 4200rpm HDD is inexcusable.
Did you install any CD/DVD burning software? Many burning programs poll the CD drive to discover when a CD is inserted, and this lights up the IDE activity light (it is not just an HD activity light).
1) Yes, definitely (as shown in numerous benchmarks).
2) Talk to a Dell rep (much better for business class notebooks).
3) Not sure about Australia, but European experience is encouraging (same for me as for pzq).
