The only way I would give up any IBM lappy is if the duct I was using to keep the screen attached kept coming off -AND if I couldn't find more duct tape elsewhere! Either way, I know that baby would keep running.

I gotta agree with aintz: why are your lappies not lasting more than 2 years? Mine never need physical repair until about/after year-3. Then again, I've been blessed with buying mid-range, not consumer-end, laptops.

Actually, is possible. There's a build process called BartPE that uses your current XP install (even for an OEM) to build a bootable CD, DVD, USB and I think external drive.
It is not a process for the impatient or non-technical...
