Keep the desktop if you can. There really is no replacement if you are a heavy gamer. DTR's are neat and all, but only if you dont have the capability to own both.
Screen resolution is one of those things that is 100% user preference. WUXGA is really nice looking, but it can make your eyes bleed if you arent used to it =)
