According to the part number, that is an Ultrabay 2000 drive. Look at this link, and you will see a chart that shows which systems use the Ultrabay 2000 drives.
You don't have to disable the password setting...just store your passwords somewhere, so that you have access to them. Leaving your system unguarded can lead to trouble if your Thinkpad walks away.
To my knowledge, you are pretty much out of luck. There are some password cracking warez out there, but I don't support them, because it defeats the purpose.
It's probably too late, but you might want to go ahead and make your recovery disks BEFORE you uninstall anything else, incase you change yourmind.
Unfortunately, the T40s had some system board issues. Personally, I think that they are subrelated to flexing of the systemboard.

I would use this as a reference. It isn't easy to do yourself. You can have moniserve do it for you for a little over $100USD, depending on the size of the screen. There are pics of the bulbs there, as well as in the tutorial above.
