Lowering the AGP speed will cause slower gameplay, if you're a FPS gamer.. Video corruption may be caused by drivers as well as vid card.. What drivers are you running? Try using the 8.05 from the alienware site, as that's what I use.
I cant believe they're still using cheap thermal paste... I had the same thing happen with my 766, it was fine for a few months, then just went downhill untill I couldnt stay in windows for more than 30minutes without it shutting off......

I have a 766, and have never run into that problem(yet) but, you can try removing the drive, and making sure there is not any foreign materials inside the slot or on the contacts. Use a can of air, or blow in there, try not to spit ,...
