There's an ATI HD3650 available for it also.
As for the ATI x1800, it runs too hot in the m5550i R3.
The CPU can be upgraded to the 2.33 GHz T7600, which is the fastest that will work in the m5550i R3.
I just picked up a pair of 32 gb Patriot Warp, version 2, SATA I/II SSD's for $99 at Fry's, $89 w/a $10 rebate, which I've installed in my Gateway P6831FX, setup as a RAID 0.
So far no problems at all.

I just got through w/upgrading the cpu on my m5550i, from a 2 GHz T2500 Core 1 Duo to a 2.33 T7600 Core 2 Duo. I had to do a BIOS Upgrade also for the T7600 to work, as well as allow 4 gb of memory to be installed.
The only problem was...
This weekend I'm upgrading the cpu on my Alienware m5550i from it's original 2.0 GHz Core 1 Duo T2500 to a 2.33 Ghz Core 2 Duo T7600. I've already updated my BIOS to Rev 2.07W, which also allows me to run 4 gb of memory (3.25).
