my old toshiba 40gb 5400rpm put out significantly more heat than the hitachi 60gb 7200rpm that I'm using right now (using mobile meter, it reports ~10"C difference in HD temp).

wait ... i retract back my comment above .. just this evening, while i'm not doing anything at all (left the laptop on table while I was watching TV), all of a sudden my laptop rebooted and i got the loud humm and clickety-clicky noise...
