yes he can legally, just get a system builders copy of xp home and install using the key on the sticker on the bottom of laptop.

x1600 no question, then just spend $150 down th eroad to go to 2 gig ram, sell the ram you took out for ~$60 and it will only cost you $90, you cant however upgrade the video without swapping the motherboard, big buck.
