They're replacing the 8700 sli with 8800gtx sli for my old 7900gs. This was after I sent the email to michael@dell.com. The guy who called me had to check with the team that issues replacements but it worked out. Thanks woodstock!
hmm... xps wiki says it's not required for vista 64... but it said the same about vista 32 but dell does offer NSS for it...

Not according to notebookcheck. Plus it's a 256 vs 128 bit bus. I think Dell knows this and that's why they opted to give me the sli but as you said, sli often slows down games. So I'm going to call them out on their own logic.

nope, nothing is taking up the cpu or ram significantly.
i have 1 gb ram and my pagefile is set to the non-windows partition, roughly 2 gb, so it's not that. i've tried switching it back to let windows manage it but it did nothing.
used o&o defrag, still those clicks. click...click...click.... as I'm typing gonna do a nuke reformat during christmas holidays when i have time. if anyone has suggestions before then please tell me!
