You might want to try the free abandonware version of calypso. It doesn't have a calendar, but it does have great support for multiple email accounts and sorting.
If the Toshiba logo pops up on startup on the screen, or anything is visible on the screen period, then it isn't a lightbulb issue. It is probably software/driver related. How far into the boot process can you see stuff?
