Be sure and put up a review once you've had some time to play around with it. I'm thinking of ordering one myself soon and I'm curious to see how the new WSXGA+ screen option is. Most other reviews haven't had one with it.
I'd still think it's an option worth considering because the framerates will drop if you demand that you run your games at native res. You can always run it at a lower res and get more acceptable framerates. I guess the tradeoff is if the game doesn't scale well to lower resolutions. Your call in the end though.
You'd be better of checking the specifics of the warranty, but as far as other warranties I've dealt with as long as the dents and scratches are just cosmetic and don't actually dampen your ability to operate the computer in anyway it isn't grounds for replacement.
Again, I don't know the specifics, so it could be different for the completecare warranty.
As far as the resolution goes, if you want a higher-end option and can wait until sometime early 2008 then dell said they'll supposedly have those options available, as well as an LED screen option as well.
Your resolution question is kind of a hard one to answer because a 13'' screen might be fine with a 1280 by 800 res, but obviously with a 15.4'' one some people are left wanting a higher one to see more content, and others just don't care much. Your own call on that...
Everything that you detailed seems fine for some great gaming to come, but I was just wondering what resolution all of this would be running at. Assuming you are not trying to run this at a really high resolution (be it native or on a external monitor) you should be fine.
HDMI compatibility isn't exactly a "big thing" for everyone, for most consumers I'd say it's a great convenience. One simple cable to get your audio and video transferred and playing on a HDTV without any hassles (at least I hope no problems). You either want that or DVI-D as they'll be your only option to hook up to external displays that accept only a digital-in signal short of a docking station/port replicator. If hooking up to something bigger like an HDTV or newer LCD...
Yeah it is, but don't expect to put it on your lap or anything like that. Also I'd opt for something with DVI-D or HDMI so you could hook up to a bigger screen if that's at all a option you want to keep open. I know the newer HP's carry HDMI but the new dell series do not.
Well first off if you're just gonna use it to go on the internet and check mail why exactly are you spending $1500-2000 to begin with? If it's just for the 17'' screen, you can of course get a base model with coupons or whatever from dell or hp for under 1K easily.
Also you mentioned checking email and internet browsing and a 17'' screen so I assume weight/battery life are a non-issue or do you still care about it?
The only downside to the new 1720 is that the DVI-D port is gone, so if that was a big draw then it's worth looking at their refurbished options or ebay. But hey, at least you get HDCP with the shiny new DX10 capable GPU.
