Awesome, just found this thread and the RAM removal worked for me. My 8790 died 5 years ago with some data I thought I'd never get back.
Like one of the other posters, I got no beep. Powering up the computer would cause the CD drive to...
That's correct, Roger. This machine doesn't have any thermal compound directly on the GPU.
There are 4 applications of the blue tape, and those are what I recently replaced with a thinner thermal tape and am now having higher temps....
I wish I'd bought that tape, to help reduce variables in this troubleshooting.
G-Omaha, do you recall how the thickness of your frag tape compares with the factory thermal tape?
According to that webpage, G-Omaha's tape is .05...
Things keep getting worse. I applied my 5 mil frag tape to the chips underneath the keyboard: The little square chips with their corresponding indentations in the panel above (which come from the factory with frag tape on them); and the...
Well, my proc was idling at 35 degress without additional cooling before I cleaned it and replaced the factory thermal paste with AS5. So something's gone wrong (especially considering the inconsistent temps).
Your problem could be...
I spoke too soon in my first post on this page.
Processor temps never go below 37 degrees. But they fluctuate up to 51 when idle or under low stress. Heavier usage (like video encoding) will get up to 58.
The temp fluctuations do...
"Due to the unique shape and sizes of the particles in Arctic Silver's conductive matrix, it will take a up to 200 hours and several thermal cycles to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to...
Down to 38C on the first boot after a new AS5 application. Whew!
This time around, I cleaned more thoroughly and slowly, and buffed for longer with the lens cleaning paper.
After wiping off the old AS5, I noticed there is a small...
I've removed the CPU heatsink to try it again. Here are some photos of the CPU and heatsink:

It looks like the...
