If you can afford it, go with the Inspiron e1505 instead. She will like the core duo processor much better then the Turion. But if you are on a budget then go with the e1501. It's a good laptop.

Yes, it does seem to take a little longer for Vista to start up. However, if you do a hibernate it takes only a few seconds to start up your laptop. If you are annoyed by the slow bootup time you might want to try this.
Try looking at some of the Dell Latitude models. They are really great for business and I'm sure you can find one to match your specs. I would check there before looking at any of the laptops that you mentioned.
It depends on how much you can get Vista for. I got mine at CampusTech for around $70 and I would say it is definitely worth it. If I would have went to Wal-Mart and forked over $160+ for it I might have been a little more skeptical.
Sometimes Dell has some very lame support. But other times they work very well. Also, other competitors have much worse support then Dell.
eBags has some great deals. Most of the time better than eBay. I carry mine in my backpack though. It doesn't get tossed around that much. Also, it is a lot more secure that way. Theives are less likely to steal a backpack then a bag...
