You also might want to call around "mom and pop" computer shops. We have a laptop graveyard for such occasions. Other shops might do the same.
Alienware also sells cases and whatnot on ebay.
Off the top of my head, the fps issues sound like vertical sync may be turned on, limiting total fps. Games look better with it enabled, but turn it off when benchmarking to achieve high fps possible.

Dang, Hammerhead gets all the credit. I posted a detailed article on how to slipstream drivers into the XP disc. Just because I didn't spell it out, I get no thanks. Ohwell, Hammerhead has helped me numerous times so it's all good.
