I always found it easiest to use a gparted live cd set up your ext3 partition and a 2gb swap space ( i like to make it that big) then u should be fine and install to the ext3 partition.
I dont think you can although i am quite unsure. I would assume you cant because i would think that the program particular to the card would scan for its company.
I dont believe there to be a way to do this thats the downside to the SB for laptops

I would go with the x1600 as itll handle dvds fine and programming i am assuming like java visual basic type of stuff? If so the card doesnt necessarily need to be high end graphics and if your only doing some gaming you probably wont...

Best for antivirus for me would be clamav as it doesnt use too too many resources and its free and always being updated. Firewall would be zone alarm free because its easy to use and seems to work well.
