Sounds like a stand alone dvd player is the way to go. I live in Australia so technology's a bit more expensive but I didn't take into account that using my lappie's dvd player a lot will wear it out.

I ended up uninstallling the AC 97 audio driver. I now use the default windows xp driver and it seems to be working fine. Thanx Jerry from powernotebooks.com
