if its dell, the sound bar meter is handled by quickset if its running, if not, then you wont see any meter if you press the dedicated volume keys although the volume will still soften or pump it louder as you like. i dont think quickset...

turn off the computer completely. or better yet just plug in the charger so that you won't miss anything.
@hardysmiles, have you installed the sigmatel audio software from dell? i dont know bout ubuntu but in xp, i need to go to the control panel, start the sigmatel audio to get it working.

i think in order to get the powermizer is to install the nvidia software.
in system restore you can remove restore points that you don't need anymore, this will also add to your hdd space. go to start, all programs, accessiories, system tools, then disk cleanup. hope it helps.

i suggest, you use boot camp instead of parallels, i think it will be easier for you to remove windows once you dont need it anymore.
