If VLC can't play it you've likely got a problem with your DVD drive. All codecs needed to play DVDs are built in to VLC.

Give VLC Player a try. Free, and has it's own codecs.

You can probably download a 20 day demo of it to find out.

Unplug the monitor. At least on my ATI card that will force everything back to the laptop screen.

Good luck with that. Buy a cheap monitor instead.
