I had the same problem with the screen of my 1714smi. One day the screen started to flick and the next day went dimmed on the bottom. ACER UK toke 10 days to fix it. But the most bizarre think is that I have an extended 3 year waranty...
I copied my mp3 library which is about 80 gigs, across to the HD of my 1714 smi . Once I finished copying if I click the main folder Properties to check the total size it comes up as 12.6 gigs??? If I open the inside folders...

Well, My 1714 SMi is up and running and it is a beauty!! No dead pixels at all in what I can only describe as an amazing screen (and I'm used to the quality of a lacie CTR "21). Now I haven't fully tested the power of this baby...
