Assume in communiaction that 1 byte = 9 bits (there is bound to be either a parity and/or a stop bit added in there)
Just make sure the auto selected channels use either channel 1, 6 or 11, the secondary channels don't matter.
The above chanels don't overlap and will give the best performance.
The speeds you are getting is really slow even for 11b.

WPA2/AES should not slow down your connection speed by very much.
There will be a small hit but it should be little.

The N1 is rock steady though and easy to setiup.
What WLAN card is in your 1710 ?
Dell 150x is probably your best bet for stability/speed.
Atheros is the best for speed...

Play with wireless mode.
The default setting is ofcourse for 11n.
Try one of the other ones (not legacy as this forces 54Mbps max)
Hopefully one of them will get you to 108Mbps.
