i had a few different alphas of Longhorn and i wasnt that impressed.. yeah M$ added some nice eyecandy features but it just bloated the hell out of explorer.exe... average mem usage of explorer was in the 180k range.. i hope they fix...
you dont have to reinstall windows.. just partition your drive and give your self a couple of gigs to run linux in.. format it in ext3, and install linux into that new partition.. good n direct tut on dual booting nix with xp.....
check your power settings.. its probably setup to go into standby or hibernate when you hit the power button..
Spiike.. what OS are you using? im assuming XP pro.. if so are you using the service pack with the MSVM removed.. you may need to reinstall the virtual machine separate from IE.
