It was most likely 802.11a, (not sure) and the coverage is better in the busiest city places (Manhattan). You acess them via login and password so i guess they are not too worried about people breaking into their service (who knows)

Regarding the wireless service bebster83, at least here in NY there is a wireless service that you can acess with your wifi card. The company has transmiting stations all over the city so you get decent coverage. A classmate had it, i don't recall what the company name is but it was rather expensive.
