you can ghost your orginal laptop drive to an external usb or ieee drive. Just use ghost to image drive to a file locaed on the usb drive. You can also retore the image the same way. If you need help making the boot disk let me know.
On media direct 3 it requires the partition to boot with booting the os. The only way I know of configuring it is to run the cd before installing the os. It writes files to the fat partition be forinstalling the os.

7950 desktop card - yes has two videos out, notebook 7950 - no has one video out. Note sure what you mean by inline?
have you tried the quick restore on bootup?
mine down throttles at 104, on I8KFanGui i avgerage temp about 112 with default settings.
m1710 with 7950 I get 3.5 + hours using the default nvidia powermizer settings.
