For the ClearType... Go under personalization --> Window Color and Appearance --> Open Classic Appearance Properties --> Click Effects --> Check and Choose ClearType

like the furball mentioned... check your dpi settings... make sure they are at 96 and also turn on Clear Type. I would point you to where those are located if you let me know if you are running XP or Vista
Don't know if this will help but worth a try... in the BIOS, are you running the internal USB in 'Compatible' mode or High Speed'? I've had problems (mostly Bluetooth) when it is set to High Speed.
