What exactly are your girlfriend needs. If she needs battery life then you can kiss good bye to all the cheap laptop because they usually come with really weak batteries. A higher model would give you better battery life.

the clicking thingy is your hard drive i believe if you have a hitachi drive because my does the same thing too. It is suppose to be a power mangement feature. The LCD thing you mention is just the backlight.
You should not be concerned. The clock problem is really a bios problem, and it has no effect on performance because it does clock correctly. It is just that Windows is reporting the value wrong from the bios. It is the same on mine....
