My apologies, I did try both with no avail, including the alsamixergui. I started a thread over in the dell 17+ section before I knew there was a linux section and there might be a fix there. http://www.notebookforums.com/post2560094.html
Cool, I will try that when I get home. I am running the 2.6.17-11-generic kernel I hope it works for me too. So when you did this did it just start working or did you have to do anything else.
I tried that and had no options that I could change.
When I open the sound options it only has master and PCM both of which are up. There is nothing more in preferences to help me out. This is kinda frustrating =\
