Hi all,

I created a dos boot DVD and ran phlash16 nameofbios.mhp. BIOS flashing started but phlash started beeping after a while and complained about a size mismatch or something like that. It then kept beeping. The laptop didnt switch off any more and kept beeping. I reset the machine (taking batteries out) and now the machine is completely dead. It doesn't even show the power led when plugging the AC in.

Any body got an idea what to do? SNIFF

Pack it up and send it to Acer because short of a motherboard replacement there's nothing you can do about it. While you're at it complain to those monkeys to maybe release a WinFlash for Vista so that maybe people could flash the BIOS while under the new OS. If that's not what happened to you I'd have to seriously ask you why you didn't flash the BIOS while under Windows and risked it via a bootable cd.

i had almost the same problem happen to me last night (see my post).
i read elsewhere that we have to reset the bios jumper to get it back to default. i'm still in the process of figuring out how to do that. either way, i'm going to wait until i get a response from tech support. they'll probably say to send it in, but i'm still gonna wait just in case.

There is no such jumper on laptop motherboard people. Even if there was, that perticular jumper has to do with SETTINGS and not the actual BIOS flash itself. The BIOS has two areas in it, the flash portion which holds all the programming for the BIOS (basic input output system) and the settings section (the portion that has all of your options set when you go into the BIOS screen on bootup with F2, DEL, F1, whatever). If the flash is corrupt there's nothing to do except change out the BIOS chip or replace the motherboard. Sometimes motherboard manufacturers have the ability to flash the BIOS with a special hardware tool directly to the chip itself. The only other "save the day" setup that motherboard manufacturers have started to have in the past few years is two BIOS chips onboard. One is for the main system to use and the other is a backup in case you botch the flash on the main. However, I have never seen this implemented on a laptop before... never. If it was the laptop would detect the botched flash on the main, revert to the backup, post and prompt you to restore the flash on the main bios chip from the backup on the first subsequent post.

i figured out a way to get my system back up and running using a USB floppy drive and booting the BIOS from there (or something like that). i'll post the detailed instructions of what worked for me by the end of the week.

hopefully you didn't already send your machine into acer.

hey Chris,
I have the same problem after ugrading BIOS. Beeping, hanging and cant even login to windows. but I think there must a way out. Packing up my laptop to manufacturer definitely cost me few more hundreds! It's worthless. I'm waiting for your solution if you are able to help me too. sorry for the delay. i know that at least one of you has been waiting eagerly for this. hopefully it works for everyone like it worked for me.
*a caveat: this may be stating the obvious, but you need a working computer with a working floppy drive and a USB floppy drive (both may be the same for you).

1. Get Crisis Recovery Disk program (download directly from here or here.)
2. Find BIOS.WPH file for your computer from your System Recovery CD or d/l from Acer website.
3. Copy that into the Crisis Recovery Disk program folder
4. Open up WINCRIS.exe
5. Create a MINIDOS Crisis disk A. This will format the floppy disk and then make the recovery disk
6. Unplug AC, take out battery from laptop
7. Take the Crisis Disk just made and put it into the USB floppy drive, attach USB floppy drive to laptop
8. Press and Hold “Fn” and “Esc” buttons together, then while holding down said buttons, plug in AC and turn on computer.
--->A. You should still be holding “Fn” and “Esc”
9. The green indicator light should stay lit up and Bluetooth light turns on
10. The USB floppy drive’s indicator light should be lit up and assessing the Crisis Disk (can hear it working)
11. The computer will start making loud beeping sounds. This is what you want; don’t turn off the computer. This will go on for 3-5 minutes, so let it be until it stops.
--->A. You can let go of the “Fn” and “Esc” buttons now.
12. Once it’s done doing its thing, the beeping will stop and the computer will restart itself and start booting up like it used to, ending at your desktop screen
13. Then you’ve transformed your expensive paperweight into a functioning machine again.

That is interesting, even though I am not sure that this had worked, as my machine was completly dead: no led lights, nothing. I finally disassembled the notebook and send the motherboard to www.bios-fix.de. They guy there did a really great job: he soldered out the bios and put a new one on a socket. He flashed two versions for me A23 and A27. Absolutly great service, for 47EUROS + shipping. I am so glad, that the ferrari is resurrected.

I send two emails to Acer service France, they never ever replied. I think that the laptop is not bad, but I will not buy Acer again, as their support really sucks (at least in France).

I have the same problem with 2 laptops, i have Acer aspire 5310 and aspire 1520.
with aspire 5310 i do all the steps but The green indicator light did not stay lit up and Bluetooth light too. For a while floppy seems to work but after 3 minutes it stops, the power buttion did not ligh up after i press Esc and Fn.
With aspire 1520 the floppy does not work!.
Please help. Thank you
