MrToad is a n00b, but everyone loves n00bs!
I've managed to get hold of the QuickPlay installation files of a dv6xxx with Core2Duo/Intel AHCI...

This one shipped with WinXP MCE.

I'm comparing both right now and playing "spot the differences".

At first glance, although the "Platform.ini" is identical in both, the .cab archives aren't.

The data4.cab is substantially bigger in the dv6xxx distribution.

Thing is... Without an statement about your inconditional love for frogs, toads and batrachians in general IDK if I can be asked to go through the aggravation of uploading a GB of data on rapidshare ^^

Well, I have it compressed, split into volumes and ready in the queue to upload on Rapidshare...

Criticize the Australians for massacring poor defenseless cane toads and I will click the "upload" button...

Maybe I'm too dumb and don't know how to do a good search

Edit:
I found something, but it is not very useful.

QP v2 will use 1GB of space , instead of the current 204MB for QP v1. this is something I don't really like

Unable to run QP2.3 without WP

Hello Amiga,
I also bought a second-hand Dv1000 and i find a lot interest in it.
I have been carefully read, download QP2.3, create partition X for QP.
Yet it is still not work without XP.
Could you please give me a favour or guide me in detail.

My dv 1000 is 40 G, it is separated into for partion. C: WinXP, D: ghost; G: Data, X: format-NTFS-primary.

Toxico also posted a guide, in which X: must be unformatted, yet the installation go in C (not in X and i was unable to copy to or set up QP in X) and as a result, QP run in XP==> disappointed.
I greatly thanks to you and any one can help me, i have been spending two weeks to solve but not result.

Thanks

I was just about to reinstall my DV1000 and accidently hit a Media key after hitting the Power key and up pops QP2!

Did very little testing, but it seems that hitting either Media key will get it to boot to the new QP2, just MUST hit the Power key first. (I can handle that)

I'll try to do some more testing later, since my machine is in questionable state, but at least there has been some progress. I'm assuming that its normal that QP2 wants to Hibernate everytime I shut down?

Dear brother Toxico
I have been following your instruction carefully, yet, the two thing that make me confusing are:
1/<boot drive>:\SwSetup\ folder (mostly for safekeeping purposes).

==> Could you please let me know, which drive should i copy to (C: or X. Moreover, i have not installed QP before, thus my dv 1000 haven't this directory.

5. After creating the unallocated space, assign it the drive letter X: but DO NOT FORMAT IT.

==>I am unable to copy to X: (because it is not formatted, neither run the installation on this drive). Thus, i can not copy, browse or install in X: as well.

From two issues above, my QP is able to run in XP mode, i.e, unable to run without XP boot.

To solve the problem, i have created a partition X:, 1024 MB, formatted it to NTFS, primary, browse it for installation. As a result, my computer is able to run QP in XP mode. All is invain.

I am really want to install my dv 1000 and run QP direct. Please help me.

Moreover, i am Vietnamese, living in Ho Chi Minh City. If anyone come to travel in Vietnam, i am keen on giving any help.

Van Huy

As it was before I screwed it up by deleting the QP partition without researching it first, I now have a 1027.6MB partition of Type D7 (according to an old version of Partition Magic Pro), and am able to boot directly into QuickPlay Direct 2.3.

I'll condense the instructions into one post, as things stand now (eventually we'll hopefully get the full package hosted but for now it can be pieced together). These are for a reinstall of QP Direct without bothering your other partition/s (except maybe resizing if necessary):

1. Back up your system in case of catastrophic failure (always a good first step when jacking around with partitions).

2. Download HPQPDP.rar or HPQPDP.zip, from http://ridickulous.net/quickplay/

3. Extract whichever you downloaded and drop the resulting HPQPDP folder into your <boot drive>:\SwSetup\ folder (mostly for safekeeping purposes).

4. Using PartitionMagic Pro or Disk Management in Windows something else to either shrink your main partition, secondary partition, or whatever. You want to end up with a 1027.6 MB (or 1028 MB) UNALLOCATED area of space at the END of the drive. Go through all the reboots the machine will likely want to make this happen. It can't hurt to verify that the unallocated space is there and unallocated after all this. (NOTE: If Partition Magic keeps giving errors saying "Selected disk contains one or more Partitions which cannot be moved," you have a recovery partition that prevents it from doing what you need it to or drive information has changed. You may have to find another way of resizing your partitions or a reboot might solve the problem.)

5. After creating the unallocated space, assign it the drive letter X: but DO NOT FORMAT IT.

6. Hie thee to the HPQPDP folder and run setup.exe.

7. Wait.

8. Wait some more.

9. Reboot and keep on waiting.

10. Shut down the laptop and hit the Quickplay button. You WILL most likely see a Windows logo, since QP2.3 is Windows-based whereas QP1.x is Linux-based.

11. Enjoy a celebratory glass of single-malt scotch, and pop in or browse to your favorite flick. This step is optional if you are at work and/or not legal drinking age.

MANY thanks to everyone for their input. For the above files, thanks to modemboy for providing the .rars and to AmigaDude for the valid data2.cab and data3.cab files. Also, thanks to Ericko for the QPv1 image (found at http://www.megaupload.com/es/?d=QVE3S9PU) in case someone's machine cannot run QP 2.x, and to everyone else that pitched in.

[Disclaimer: the 1.x image may not work in all machines. It looks like it was taken from a disc that shipped with a dv4000 CTO; YMMV. See the following article if you need 1.x:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN

If you need QP 1.x and you created your recovery discs you have another option for restoring QP; it is listed in this article.]

This message was typed in anticipation while QP was installing.

[Edit: linusl also provides a more complex way of getting QP2.x to work under different circumstances if your QP partition is still intact - see page 42 of this thread.]

[Edit number 2: Changed slightly since files have ben re-uploaded.]
