New Inspiron 1420...very slow...
I bought my girl a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop for christmas. Her usage is very basic from emails to watching movies so I got the basic package with standard video memory and 1.46Ghz Intel.
The computer runs very sluggish and slow even with 1 gig ram. I have a strong feeling that Vista is the reasoning behind this slow performance. I have a 1.2Ghz ultra portable and XP flies. Is Vista the cause of the slow performance?

IMHO....yes,especially with 1GB,there are plenty of sites that have tweaks etc for getting Vista to run faster....personally I would just use the disc from your ultraportable and install XP....get the XP drivers from the dell support site first and maybe burn them to cd for convenience

Sounds good. Can I use my other laptop's XP COA code on the Dell?

I used my Dell 9300 XP install disk to put XP on my 1520. The biggest issue was having to slipstream the SATA drivers onto the install disk using NLite. I was able to pull all the XP drivers off the Dell web site to complete the XP installation on my 1520.
My 1520 worked great with XP. I left it installed with XP for a short period of time to test the performance difference between Vista Premium and XP Home. After a few weeks, I put Vista back on my 1520. Right now I prefer Vista over XP and have done some tweaks to get it to work every bit as efficient as XP. Vista has been out long enough now that drivers and software seem pretty stable. I'd really recommend 2 GB of RAM at a minimum when running Vista. I imagine anything less than a 2.0 CPU will show less than preferable performance as well. On another note, I was able to get the latest Dell Media Direct to function on my XP install. If you install XP, you might have to install some other 3rd party applications. Those would be for DVD players and burning software. Good luck.
