CES08: Blu-ray on Xbox 360?

Man you gotta love it...

Quote:
At the Consumer Electronics Show two years ago, shortly after Microsoft announced the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, the company's then-Xbox marketing executive Peter Moore admitted that a future add-on that would play Blu-ray discs was not out of the question, if the need for one arose.

At this year's CES, Microsoft's Xbox group marketing manager Albert Penello told Reuters today that the Warner move wasn't the end of the format wars, but acknowledged that his company is still keeping its options open.

"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Penello told the news service.

With WB I believe it was that just back out of the HD-DVD camp, they are having to reevaluate whether they will be able to continue or not. Thing is I kinda wish they stayed with it and both formats failed myself, I am not a fan of either.

Now we have black 360's with 120 gig hd's HDMI and now flippin blu-ray possibly? And Microsoft thought Sony was going overboard?

Aint gunna happen.......

MS will give lip service for a while, but in the end they are angling for true direct download distribution, in doing so they cut out any middle man and become completely vertically integrated = more $$$$ for M$.

And really the only things the need to accomplish this is even larger HDD's for the 360. Sure gigabit and N networking would be nice but the only thing holding MS back is the lack of bandwidth from its customers stuck with slow ass dsl and cable.

If everyone got fiber over night you could say goodbye to bluray,hd-dvd and even dvd drives!

I think Compact Disc sales are a clear indicator of what will happen when a HD movie downloads as fast as say an MP3.......

Correct. Toshiba and Paramount will not go silently into the night.

Toshiba pledged to keep up the fight against Blu-ray Disc during a press conference at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, despite numerous media reports and analyst comments pronouncing Blu-ray Disc the winner of the format battle. The Japanese company still has some powerful allies in HD DVD, including Microsoft, which sells an add-on HD DVD player for the Xbox 360.

Should HD DVD lose the format war, Microsoft will have to start using Blu-ray Disc on the Xbox 360 in order to allow users to play high definition video games. It's not an outcome the U.S. company would likely want to see. Blu-ray Disc was developed by Sony and is an integral part of the PlayStation 3 game console, a rival to the Xbox 360.
