Here's my n00bish review thus far of the x40

First off.. everybody told me "you won't believe how small and light it is" and I was like "sure, sure".... and then I got it, opened the box, and was like "this is it? Where's the damn computer?" This thing is tiny and light.

The speed is about what I expected ... I would hope the chip would be a little faster. It's a low voltage 1.2 P-M. I think the right target for this type of laptop would ideally be at around 1.7-1.8.

I upgraded the RAM to a gig with a crucial 512 stick. I personally notice a big difference in doing this.

The battery life with the standard 4 cell battery leaves a lot to be desired... about 2.5 hours any way you cut it. The 8 cell battery makes this thing the perfect machine for me, though, with 5.5+ hours.

The fan never runs, the thing is quiet as hell, and it doesn't heat up at all. I can use it for hours on end and it won't even be more than mildly warm. My father's gateway laptop gets to 2nd degree burn levels warm after just a little use. this is an immeasurable plus, imo.

I love the fact there's no touchpad. I hate touchpads. the Pointy thingie is awesome, and I'm not even a longtime IBM user (this is my first one, other than my mom's old thinkpad from her office)

However, I'm now planning to be a longtime IBM user

This thing's perfect if you don't need a built-in optical drive, but I wish it had a firewire port. That's the one down side, but it really doesn't make that big of a difference to me.

I got the 2371 model
1.2 ghz
4 cell and 8 cell batteries
512 soldered ram, 512 crucial upgrade = 1 gig
40 GB HD
802.11 b/g

Nice pics. The only thing I dont like about the X40 is that it does not have SXGA resolution. I like having a larger workspace. But with that 12 inch (?) screen I guess it would be a strain on the eyes.

Oh and the lack of bluetooth is keeping me from getting this laptop.

Several of the models have bluetooth built in...I have a similar model with onboard bluetooth. I thought the same thing about the resolution, however, for a 12" screen XGA really is a decent resolution at least in my case. Granted, I would like it smaller because I don't mind tiny text / icons but before I turned it over to my wife I would often default to doing things on the X40 instead of my desktop just becuase I enjoyed working on it. I moved to the X40 from a T41p and, while I loved the power of the T, the X was and is a perfect mix for me of portability vs. performance...tho I am sure many would be just the opposite.

I've got the X41 tablet and it's a great laptop.
