OK so I broke down and spent my lunch money on a new drive.

It’s a Western Digital Scorpio black (160GB / 7200RPM / SATA / 3.0Gb/s

It seemed to be a nifty drive for a nifty price and I am thinking that it is compatible with my system and a great improvement in performance ? ? ? But I got troubles up the yazoo.

The bios does not see the new drive and the bios won’t let make any changes in drive settings. Do I need to change jumper settings or is the problem in the bios. The problem is that the bios does not see the new drive and does not let me make changes in “user” mode.

I have tried the F6 option when trying to install WIN XP, using the floppy I made with (dlgsetup11_dos) from WD’s web site. All I got was some stupid message about a missing readme file. Then I booted with the floppy, and the program ran fine, but it made no difference. I kept getting NO DRIVE INSTALLED.

What should I do now, should I change jumper settings, is it something in the bios. I am the only person to use this computer, why won’t it let me have access. The original drive was a 100gb 7200rpm-sata unit, so the wonderful Scorpio should be compatible, right? Is there a source for a detailed, step by step instructions that an intermediate beginner like me can understand? It is very slow trying to learn about this stuff from all across the internet.

Everyone has been helpful and I want to send a shout out to all who contributed, but I put my self in a place that I could not get out of with the old drive. That’s why I had to go for the new one. I just wished that I had been a little smarter and a little bit more cautious and done things a lot sooner.
