I need to replace my optical drive - recommend one?

Hi guys,

All I have right now in my 5680 (D500p) is a CD-Rom, I went cheap because I have an external drive. However, lately the inernal one just sucks! It's gotten to the point where it can barely read cd's. Normally this is not a problem, but I recently went to reinstall Linux and after multiple attempts it just keeps failing, I know its a good cd, I have burnt and reburnt it many times and md5 checked it.

So my question is, where can I get a replacement, preferable in Canada? I found one here http://www.bytewizecomputers.com/products/7/34/112/7627 I was wondering if anyone knows if this would work? If not, please let me know of any remcommendations.

TIA

Edit: the reason i cant install linux from the external is because there is no support for external drive booting...unless, I am missing something.

Have a look at the NEC ND6500A. Includes DVD-R DL writing.
Newegg has them for $US125.00

Agree with Aussie. I bought one for my 8790 and it is a sweet deal. The only thing that I haven't tested yet is the dual lay capability (back ordered where I ordered it from - it was a couple of bucks cheaper than others that are available). While many media may be capped at 4x or 6x, it does indeed write at 8x to a couple of media. I have a post in Sager General about it.

To date, I have cut about 60 DVD-R/DVD+R and so far no coasters. All seem to work well with a variety of DVD players (Not computers). Have not had any problmes reading the DVDs on a computer either. There is a Firmware update available and it is rather easy to install (can do it in Windows - on the fly).

I will be cutting between 200 and 250 DVD+R/-R for a friend over the next week. I hope that everything goes well.

If you are looking for cheap, there is a certain sager retailer, I cannot say the name on the forum, who is selling the Combo sd r-2512 for $65
