Question Keyboard Broke -- Sony VGN-FS660p/w

The dog spilled tea into the keyboard. I cleaned it, dried it and then replaced it. I bought a new keyboard from Sony and installed it -- same behavior as the original: About 80% of the letters work fine but the other 20% type double letters: when you hit the Q it types QW, and so on.

Meanwhile the computer works perfectly otherwise: when I use a wireless keyboard it operates like new.

But here's the strange thing. After leaving it aside for about two months, I turned it on just to fool around and it worked! NO double letters, just perfect.

Now it has reverted back to typing double letters again.

I really like the computer for some reason, it just feels good to me. Any ideas? I've cleaned the contacts inside the ribbon holder with solvent and some thick clean paper, blown them out, let dry, etc. And because it went back to working once before, its really hard to give up and chuck it.

Bless you for any help!

Paul

I am afraid that you will experience the on/off issue for time to comes, until you replace the keyboard itself.

cheers ...

Thank you very much for your ideas QHN.

I see I wasn't clear. I did replace keyboard, and while the new one worked for a short time, now neither of them work properly. I've swapped them back and forth with no visible difference.

oh! Have you looked closely to the ribbon cable? And make sure that the underside is not touching anything close to the board

cheers ...

That tea has destroyed you motherboard in it. No worries, you can get the mechanic and tell them to wash the motherboard with some spray, i guess that would solve the problem.

Ouch, if replacing the keyboard didn't fix it, and that must have been expensive, I'd be upset as well. Don't give up. Look around for special Sony forums (if they exist, like forums.thinkpads.com).

I too feel your pain with broken laptop keyboards:

That was the second time I broke a button and I had to order a whole keyboard the first time. The latest was fixable easily. Not sure why I am sharing this, so try other forums if no one gives you a solution here. Good luck.

Odds are the tea has killed the keyboard controller which is embedded in the system board.

And then...

Well just as I was about to ditch this computer, I tried it again and lo and behold -- it works again.

Simply magic. Or witchcraft. Or astrology.

Or a tiny bit of residual moisture somewhere that eventually dried out -- a year?

Go figure.
