This makes me wary. For those of you that replaced your audio cards, what is the status now?

edit: I want to investigate something. For those of you with faulty sound cards, how many of you have applied the NHC/Speedfan fix to your Z70VAs?

I replaced my own Audio Board (DJ) many months ago, thanks to an Asus RMA, and it's been working fine since. And yes, I use NHC and Speedfan (although I still find heat and fan noise to be the achilles heel of this laptop).

If I ordered a PCMIA audio card would this solve the problem w/o having to ship it off?

By Creative? I asked them once they told me the card will not mute the laptop speakers while you use their PCMCIA audio card, but that was a a long times ago not sure if the new version solve this problem.

try unplugging all wires and run it on batteries and see if the sound comes back...

Im running a bone stock z70va, no sofware mods, no overclocks, only the OE drivers disk.

I have a similar sound card problem to one of the other posters, no red LED, but the muffled staticky sound.

The problem occurs most often when coming off a "suspend" (so the power button has to be pushed to revive the machine, not hybernate) and more often then not, the sound doesn't come back, staticy muffled garbage. somewhere between 1min to several hours the sound will return.

repeatedly removing and reinstalling the speaker/headphone plug, the staticky muffled garbage will increase in amplitude and clarity. (please don't comment on the speaker plug being bad, its not, sound will not come from the chassis speakers at this time either)

sound is usually present after a LONG powerdown time, but a warmish cold boot, or restart the sound issue will persist.

I have contacted asus and they have agreed to look at it/repair the sound card, but i cant ship it until the end of semester. 7 more weeks.

I am somewhat relieved im not alone, but somewhat concerned as well. does anybody know if the hardware has been updated in anyway? or is it a straight up re and re?

If the poster that replaced the his own card is stil around, i have looked at the PDF, it looks like there is ALOT of disassebly, comparable to the bluetooth upgrade that is "too difficult", does it actully require removal of the keyboard, touchpad, display, upper half the of chassis, etc? or is there a short cut that might be present?

I've got the exact same problem here... My previous post above is more of luck but is not a solution... And now, again, I've got no sound... It comes and goes. Need to get that static-y sound back and keep full-blasting it and the sound will come back after a long enough period of time.

There is no information about this anywhere else. This is different from the "sound coming from both headphone and speakers" problem...

I would suspect that the problem is the same, but a different manifistation. with my situation the removing and reinstalling of the headphone jack and the improvement of the sound quality would suggest that there is a problem with the switching circut. the circuit may be caught inbetween levels, not a 1 or a 0 but something in between. the sound coming back after a period may suggest that the switching level is able to creep up (or down) after some time to start working properly. again only a speculation.

my only concern is after the repair, it either happens again or i inherit the red LED problem; and i am certainly not cool with the use of a PC card. i paid for the audio, its bloody going to work.

here is a question for anybody that can answer, if have keep having trouble with the audio board, will asus do a "trade-up"? they keep my 70va and send me something else? i know that dell sometimes does this?

matthewchng: yes i have heard this once before, not this forum, i dont really remeber where it was, geared2play maybe? talking with the asus guy, he said he hasn't exacly heard this symptom, but he thought it would likely be the audio boad, apparently if it does it using the audio DJ it is fer sure the audio card; although as the audio DJ only plays audio cds does it use the hardware DA in the drive (if slimline drives have this) and just pipe audio to the speakers or does the audio DJ board do the DA and recieve a bitstream from the drive?

I have worked as a tech agent for a few months (school co-op term) on the whole the tech agents are pretty bright, and there are two stories, what they know the problem to be, and what they are allowed to tell people that call. if there is an issue that might dammage sale of the unit or the company, they are certainly not going to say anything about the engineeing of the machine. so i doubt that we will ever know exactly what the problem is, but we hope that asus have some ethics and make these notebooks work right.

have you contacted asus yet? if not do it, get the voices out, we have all paid too much for these things to be having silly problems like this, they (industry) have only been making audio cards for about 15 years, youd think they would be almost cookie cutter circuits at this point?

Asus says go to the reseller... :S Asus only service the ensemble models. Not built on Asus models...

Yes you have to go to your reseller, they should be familiar with the issue and will have the laptop's audio board replaced. This is a known issue with the Z70 red LED and all. It is not a software issue. I have had my laptop fixed twice now.

My problem is not the more popular "Plug in headphone but speaker still sound" problem. I have never encountered this problem on my laptop.

My problem is the temperamental sound board randomly choosing to work/not work. When the problem occurs (ie there is no sound from the speakers), I would be able to hear static-ky noises (which corresponds to the supposed correct sound that should be playing) when I pluck my headphones into the socket. This static-ky sound would quickly fade to nothing. Unplugging and re plugging the headphones would again have the audible noises fading once again to nothing.

mine had both issues. The red LED thing and the no sound every now and then issue. Like I said this is something that should be taken care of by your reseller. good luck

I had the *exact* same problem with my z70v for more than a year. I purchased an audio board recently from estore.asus.com for $25 and replaced it at home without an rma. I have also upgraded the driver to the latest version (1.90). Seems like problem disappeared...

It is nice to have the sound working whenever I power-on my laptop.


Follow this guide. If you are able to use a screw-driver than the rest is a no-brainer...

Hi guys

I have a M6Va and got the same sound card issue.
Asus replaced it two times, at the third time I asked if they were sure they can able to finally fix the issue.
They werent, so I kept the NB with the main speakers not working.

Today, after an year, the front speakers started working again.

Does someone knows if there is a way to fix this sound card electronically?

I do not want to pay 25$ for a sound card that will last 6 months. My option is to open the NB and disconnect the speakers...
